That Someone Is You

Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God. — Ephesians 2:19

A few times in my life I have started a new job. I remember one of them vividly. Day one. New hire orientation. I walked into a room where people were already talking and laughing with one another with connections that had clearly been formed before I arrived. I did not know a single person. I had never even worked in that town before. I just sat there, an outsider in every sense of the word, watching everyone else interact while I tried to look like I belonged.

And then the manager who had hired me walked in.

He did not just take his place at the front of the room and begin. He took the time to find me, acknowledge me, and make sure I felt welcomed. It was a simple thing. It did not take long. But it changed everything about that experience. The tension I had been carrying quietly walked right out of the room. I relaxed. I engaged. I felt like I was supposed to be there.

Someone who already belonged made room for someone who did not yet.

That is the picture Paul is painting in Ephesians 2.

He is writing to Gentiles, people who had been completely outside the covenant of God. Strangers to the promises. Foreigners to the household of faith. They had no claim, no history, no place at the table. But then Christ came and everything changed. The wall that divided insider from outsider was torn down. And people who had been strangers were brought in, not as guests, but as citizens. Not as visitors, but as family.

Ye are no more strangers and foreigners.

That declaration carries enormous weight when you remember what they used to be. They were not always family. Someone had to bring the message to them. Someone had to hold the door open and say, you belong here too.

And that is exactly what we are called to do for others.

Every person we encounter who does not yet know Christ is standing in that orientation room. Unknown. Uncertain. Watching from the outside while something is happening inside that they cannot quite access. They may not even know what they are missing. But they are strangers to the household of God, and we are already citizens of it.

We know what it is like to be brought in. Someone prayed for us, spoke to us, lived their faith in front of us, or simply told us the truth about Jesus at the right moment. The door opened and we walked through it. We are here because someone did not keep the invitation to themselves.

Sharing Christ is not a program or an obligation to be fulfilled. It is the natural response of someone who remembers what it felt like to be on the outside, and cannot bear to leave others there.

Look around you. Someone in your life is still sitting in that room, not knowing anyone, waiting for someone who already belongs to come and make them feel like they are supposed to be there.

That someone is you. Take a moment and share Christ with them today!
