More Than The Jacket

Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. — Matthew 7:21

Not everything on the outside is what it seems.

I remember a guest speaker who came into a class I was taking many years ago. He walked in dressed sharply, professional, polished, put together in every way. He made an impression the moment he entered the room. But then he did something unexpected. He removed his shoes, revealing socks full of holes. He pulled back his jacket to show a shirt underneath that was stained and torn. What appeared to be a man who had everything together was, beneath the surface, a completely different picture.

His point was simple and it landed immediately. Appearances can be deceiving.

That image has never left me. And I think about it often when I read the words of Jesus in Matthew 7.

The warning here is one of the most sobering in all of Scripture. Jesus is not describing people who rejected Him outright. He is describing people who called Him Lord. People who prophesied in His name, cast out devils, and did wonderful works. From the outside, everything looked sharp. The jacket was on. The presentation was convincing.

But Jesus said He never knew them.

It is possible to wear the appearance of faith without carrying the reality of it. To say the right words, show up in the right places, and use the right language, while the shirt underneath tells a completely different story. A life divided between the public presentation and the private reality is not something that fools God, even when it fools everyone around us.

Jesus is not questioning whether we attend church, know the scriptures, or use Christian language. He is asking something far deeper. He is asking whether we actually know Him. Whether our faith has moved from the surface into the substance of how we live, how we love, and what we do when no one is watching.

The jacket impresses people. God looks underneath it.

This is not a call to perfection. Every believer has areas of growth and places where faith is still being formed. But there is a difference between a believer who is genuinely growing and someone who has simply learned to dress the part. One is being transformed from the inside out. The other is managing an impression.

It is worth an honest moment of reflection. If someone could see everything, not just the Sunday morning version, but the private thoughts, the quiet choices, the person you are when no one is looking, would what they find match what they see on the outside?

God already sees it all. And His desire is not to expose us, but to make us whole. The good news is that the same Jesus who warns us here also invites us to come to Him as we are, torn shirt and all.
