To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory. — Colossians 1:27
If you have not noticed, our world is a pretty depressing place to be here lately. If you live in the US, we are seeing a battle of good versus evil play out right in front of our eyes. We are literally seeing an argument over the value of human life play out. The Supreme Court of our nation is set to decide what is or is not a valuable life. God help us.
It is not just in the battle over life. We see constant evil all around us. Tell me the last time you saw the news and learned about someone being mistreated, killed, robbed, or many other heartbreaking situations. Evil is at work in our world and it almost seems there is no end to it.
But I am thankful that is not the end of the story for the Christian. Could you imagine if we had to stop there and talk about how horrible the world was and that’s it? Imagine how much more depressing it would be if we did not have a special thing called hope. Hope means having confidence and trust in something. Here in Colossians, we see how God had a mystery that He made known and that mystery is Jesus Christ.
One writer said this verse could be summed up as, “Christ is revealed among you as the source of the hope of glory in a better world.” For the Christian, we have hope that this is not the end. We have confidence and trust in Jesus Christ as our Savior and that He has glory awaiting us in a far better place.
No matter how disappointing or depressing this world may be, we can still be encouraged. We have a hope that is beyond anything this world has to offer in Jesus Christ!
