I stretch forth my hands unto thee: my soul thirsteth after thee, as a thirsty land. — Psalm 143:6
Not long ago, my wife and I were talking about where to eat. It was the typical discussion between a husband and wife where neither knew where they wanted to go. We both knew that we were hungry, but neither of us knew anything we wanted to eat. As we pressed each other to decide, it was clear that no decision would be made.
Soon, we found ourselves driving down the road. As we approached each intersection, we would simply look at the options around us. After several minutes of driving, we finally found somewhere that we could agree on. The food wasn’t amazing, but the restaurant wasn’t busy, and we were able to eat a relatively peaceful meal compared to the busy restaurants nearby.
While this is just a glimpse of a moment in life, our life is filled with desire. We often desire a wide variety of things, ranging from attention, food, relaxation, and many other things. At times, that desire results in us wanting things that we shouldn’t have. Perhaps that extra piece of cake is unhealthy, or perhaps what you want leads to sin.
Our lives are filled with desire, but desire is not a terrible thing when it is focused on the right thing. David knew what that was. In this verse, he shares how his soul thirsts after God. David knew that his soul could not be completely happy apart from the satisfaction that God can provide.
It can be so tempting to give up in life. It’s tempting to throw up our hands and say it is no use. But God has peace, comfort, and joy for those who desire Him and seek after Him. Instead of giving into your desire for the things of this world, seek after God and find satisfaction in Him unlike any other.
