Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me. — Psalm 51:10
If you were to look at photos of me and compare them to my dad a few years ago, there are many similarities. People will often comment that we share some physical traits that are similar. Others share that we have some personality traits that are similar. Those who know my mom will often say I share some personality traits with her as well.
Some of those comparisons stop with my son. After all, he was adopted from China, so he does not share many of the same physical appearance traits that I do. What is interesting, however, is the personality traits that are similar. If you ask either of my parents, they will tell you he acts so much like me. Not to mention he continues to learn from me as well.
He often says he wants to be like his dad. He often wants to dress like me, say things like I do, or copy my actions. This is not to say that I am a perfect role model, but it’s a humbling experience when he expresses these things.
As Christians, our desire should be that we be like our Heavenly Father. The Bible shares that we were made in His image and likeness. Instead of being just like Him in all that we do, we often find ourselves making excuses. We give reasons to why our hearts and minds are misaligned with God.
As you reflect on your life today, are you striving to live in the example that Christ set for us? Perhaps you have already thought of a thing or two that stands in the way. If so, perhaps you need the words of this Psalm today. Ask God to create in you a clean heart and renew your mind so that you can continue to live in His example.
