Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the Spirit of the LORD came upon David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah. — 1 Samuel 16:13
Change is something that we are all accustomed to in life. If we are all honest, the world has changed dramatically around us, no matter how many years we have been alive. I think back to how things were 20 years ago and then think about how things are today. It’s not hard to see the changes around us.
People change as well. We can all no doubt think back about friends and family that we used to associate with. Perhaps they allowed sin into their life, made bad decisions, or had other things that caused them to go their separate ways. Perhaps they are not the same person they used to be.
While those are examples of bad change, there is good change as well. For an unbeliever, when they accept Jesus Christ as Savior there is a change that happens in their life. Many people want the association of good change like this in life, but they do not want to experience the inward change that is necessary.
Real change in life is not just in the actions that we go through on the outside. Real change happens on the inside, in our hearts. In this verse, David was anointed on the outside, but the real change happened when the spirit of the Lord came on him. It was an inward change.
Have you experienced that inward change in your life? Perhaps you have been trying to live your life under your own rules and own way, but that isn’t how things work with God. When we accept Christ as Savior, it changes our hearts, which is then visible on the outside.
Simply trying to be good on the outside won’t get you to heaven and doesn’t provide forgiveness of sin. Real change happens when we admit and confess our sins, giving our lives to Jesus Christ. Real change doesn’t happen just in actions on the outside, it starts in our hearts.
