And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. — John 3:19
When I was a teenager, I remember going out with my friends in the evenings. Friday nights and Saturday nights were spent with friends. We would go out to eat, watch movies, and do so many different things. We would be out at all hours of the night and into the early hours of the morning nearly every weekend.
But soon after becoming a paramedic, my views of the night changed. While my friends and I had a lot of good clean fun, I learned that it is not that way overall. Evil lurks in the dark. While scripture often has this correlation between wickedness and darkness, I saw it first hand.
There were many people who seemed to love wickedness. They were consumed by it. It would seem like every night something would happen and I would see an example of it first hand. It’s no mistake that God led the writers of the Bible to relate wickedness to night. But we all learn as we grow that wickedness happens at all times of the day.
The real problem is the love of darkness, rather than light as John writes here. Jesus came into the world as a light. He came as hope. He came as a Savior. But many rejected Him because they loved sin. They loved darkness and wickedness. What about you?
Do you love the Savior or do you love the darkness? The truth is that we cannot love both. We might pretend on the surface to love the Savior, but what is truly in our hearts? What do our deeds show? Jesus expects us to love Him and live lives that show others. What does your life show?
