We were about to walk out the door, and I noticed my son was in a panic. He was hurriedly putting all the pieces together on the toy he was playing with. He knew that we were trying to leave, but it was clear he had something he was trying to accomplish. He wanted to put all the pieces together so he could take the toy with him.
I knew that if he took that toy in the car, he would certainly lose several of the pieces. It wouldn’t be the first time that I have gone looking for toy pieces between the car cushions, but I was determined we weren’t going to lose pieces of this toy. I made the statement that all parents have probably said at some point: ” You can’t take it with you.”
He was upset, to say the least. He had plans to play with this toy in the car. He wasn’t thinking of the future and the potential lost pieces, he was only looking at the short term, the fun of playing with that toy. That is exactly how we are as Christians.
This verse is a great reminder. We brought nothing into this world and we cannot leave with anything from this world. Yet, so often, we are so focused on the things of this world that we forget the truth. These things are only temporary.
Instead of focusing on the possessions and things of this world, our focus should be on the future. Things of this world only bring happiness for a short time, but the things of God are eternal. We need to remember that the things of this world, we can’t take it with us. Instead, our focus should be on laying up treasure in Heaven.
