My soul followeth hard after thee: thy right hand upholdeth me. — Psalm 63:8
It was not too long ago that my family and I were out in a rather large crowd. My son has become very independent as he continues growing up, but he still becomes uncomfortable sometimes. That was the case on this day. We were in a large crowd, and he became a little nervous. So he decided to walk over beside me, and he told me to hold his hand. Typically, he never volunteers to hold someone’s hand.
For the next little while, he was stuck on my side. You could say he was stuck like glue to my hip. He held my hand tightly. He was constantly looking around, gauging the situation and his comfort level. Even when I had to let go for just a moment, he quickly grabbed my hand once again, squeezing it tightly.
As I read the words of this psalm, David says that his soul followed hard after God. The original word used for “follow hard” is dâbaq. The definition of this word is to be stuck to, to cling to, or to be joined together. In other words, David said he was stuck like glue to God.
There are many things that we can stick to in life. Many people are stuck to pills, a bottle, or many other things to try and help them get by. Instead, our lives were designed to be stuck like glue to God. We should firmly adhere to Him in all things and at all times.
If you examine your life, what are you stuck like glue to? Is it someone or something in this world? No matter what it is, it is taking the place of God in your life. Our desire and our focus should be on sticking like glue to God.
Across the world, there are Christians who need encouragement and strength that only God’s word can provide. We are focused on helping Christians find encouragement, develop stronger relationships with God, and help non-Christians come to accept Jesus Christ as Savior. Another Well Ministries is a non-profit ministry that relies on donations to continue our work. You can find out more about us and ways to support us here.
