Arise, shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the LORD is risen upon thee. — Isaiah 60:1
Several weeks ago, my wife and I were sitting on the couch as our son played on the floor. Our plan was to spend most of the day at home, but we would find something quick to eat out for dinner. It was not going to be anything fancy. It was more out of convenience than anything. So the time came to leave, but our son didn’t want to go!
He ignored us, continuing to play with his toys and the dogs on the floor. He saw as we got up, grabbed our coats, and anything else that we needed to leave. But he didn’t put his shoes on or prepare to leave in any way. Instead, he continued to do what he wanted to do. That’s when I said to him, “It’s time to get up and go!”
We had given multiple opportunities for him to listen, but he chose not to. He had ample time to prepare to leave the house, but he chose to ignore us. But that is often the same way we respond as Christians to God.
I love the words of this verse, “Arise, shine.” It was a commanding statement. It wasn’t time to sit down and ignore. It was time to get up and go! A time to go out and shine the light within. Time to stop being passive and start being active.
What does it take for God to get us to get up and go? Do we listen to Him the first time we are asked? Or does it take a more commanding statement or circumstance? Our desire should be that we listen the first time, responding quickly to God. When He says to go, we should get up and go!
