If you were to travel back to my hometown, you would find many people who know my family’s last name. There will no doubt be a wide variety of stories that you will hear. It’s a small town, so opinions run wild. But the one thing that remains in that area is a heritage that was left behind by so many long ago.
Growing up, I remember hearing stories about how my grandfather used to play baseball, drive a truck, and many other things. But in the end, many lives were influenced because he gave all those things up to preach the gospel. I remember hearing the stories about how my dad would preach and teach around the area. I had extended family members, cousins, and many other close friends who stood for the truth and word of God.
There were many stories about how God moved in situations. Stories about how revival swept through the area, touching hearts and lives. Stories were shared about prayer and how many of these old saints would pray for days or weeks for God to intervene. What an amazing heritage that was left behind!
David talks about a heritage left behind for the children of Israel. Their fathers had trusted in God. They had followed God, sharing the stories about how God delivered them. I wonder what might have been if that heritage had not been left. I often wonder where my life would be if I did not have the heritage that was left behind for me!
When our lives are over, what will those who follow behind us say? Our desire should be that a heritage is left behind for them to trust and follow God. Our lives should live that example before them each day.
So many times, we focus on leaving behind money and possessions in this world. We want our families to have what they need to survive in the unknown future. But the most important thing we can leave is a heritage of faith in God and trust in God’s goodness.
