I love the LORD, because he hath heard my voice and my supplications. — Psalm 116:1
When we were all younger, many of us had an interesting view of love. In our youth, we often thought of love as a feeling or emotion. We might get butterflies in our stomachs as we see a beautiful young lady or handsome young man. As we grow older, we all learn that love is not necessarily just a feeling or emotion. Love has a meaning and purpose behind it.
I still recall the day that I married my wife. Without a doubt, I knew that she was the one that God wanted me to marry. I knew that I loved her and would spend the rest of my life with her. But little did I know how much my love would grow over time. Each day, something happens that causes me to love her more and more.
The same should be the case with our love for God. Not because of a feeling or emotion but because each day, we grow to know Him more. We understand the things that He does in our lives more. The more we understand and grow in our relationship, the more our love for Him should grow.
We could probably all say that our relationship started with love for God because of His love for us. But why do you love God now? We all would still say we love Him because He first loved us. But each day of our lives, our love for Him should grow.
In this Psalm, I love how the psalmist starts by saying, “I love the LORD, because.” There were so many reasons that an entire Psalm focused on them! Today, take a moment to think about that thought. Why do you love God?
We absolutely should love God because He first loved us. But what has changed since then? What about His continued mercy? What about His never-ending grace? His continual blessings on our lives? Chances are we didn’t understand all those things when our relationship with God began. If you were to write why you love God, what would you include in your list of because?
Across the world, there are Christians who need encouragement and strength that only God’s word can provide. We are focused on helping Christians find encouragement, develop stronger relationships with God, and help non-Christians come to accept Jesus Christ as Savior.
