And when Haman saw that Mordecai bowed not, nor did him reverence, then was Haman full of wrath. — Esther 3:5
People do not always respond like we would expect them to. That was undoubtedly the situation after a conversation that I had. I will never forget the day I sat down with this person to have a conversation, but they took everything I said completely wrong. We were talking about things that had happened in our lives.
But it was clear that was about as civil as things would be. This person became very angry, yelling and saying things that should not have been said. I was completely taken aback by the words. It wasn’t long before the conversation ended, and we went our separate ways. While I have often looked back on that day, questioning my words, I also use that day to remember how I respond to people.
Haman was certainly not the good guy in the Book of Esther. He was filled with anger and rage when he expected all the reverence before him, and Mordecai refused. He had an expectation but became upset when things didn’t go his way. But things don’t always go as we want in life.
Our Christian witness is one of the most important things we can protect in life. How we respond to others is crucial to showing that we are different. If we respond with anger and wrath when things don’t go our way, what does that tell others about us?
The Bible reminds us that we should be slow to anger. Proverbs 16:32 says that someone slow to anger is better than the mighty. Our response shouldn’t be anger and wrath when things don’t go our way. Instead, we should consider the word of God. We should reflect and consider how God would want us to respond.
