Patience is sometimes one of the most challenging things in life. It would be wonderful if we were all born with a great amount of patience that was never tested. We could simply face the circumstances and situations in life and never grow impatient or frustrated. But that’s simply not the case. There are moments we may have patience, but there are other things that will test our patience.
For example, we may find it a little easier to wait patiently for something that we don’t deem as important or life-altering. Maybe you don’t find it difficult to patiently wait for an upcoming vacation or even an upcoming birthday or anniversary. But what if that situation was something like you or a family member facing a health crisis?
Chances are that changes things just a bit. I have seen some of the most patient people I know become impatient when facing job uncertainty, health scares, or even trials in this life that no one would want to face. This doesn’t mean that they are a weak person or a failure.
There are many times that God uses these things in our lives to teach us something. The psalmist writes here that his soul was waiting for the Lord because he was his help and shield. He realized that for all the things he was facing, he needed the Lord. He needed God for help, protection, strength, and I would imagine some patience.
It can be difficult waiting for a good thing. But waiting on God is always a good thing. He knows what you need and how best to help. Rather than messing things up on our own, we should wait on God: our help and shield. Whatever you are facing, wait on God. It’s worth waiting for a good thing!
