Why standest thou afar off, O LORD? why hidest thou thyself in times of trouble? — Psalm 10:1
One of my son’s favorite things to do is to try to hide from you or to try and find you while you are hiding from him. He often struggles to hide his excitement and you can easily find him giggling behind a door or in a closet. But when I am able to hide from him, I often hear him roaming all over our house.
He is diligent in his search. He will search behind things, under things, and search every room. Sometimes, I’m able to watch him and hear him, then move without him catching me. If that happens, he sometimes becomes a little frustrated. I know he’s starting to become more disheartened when I hear the words, “Daddy where are you?”
As Christians, things are not that much different with our Heavenly Father. Sure, He doesn’t run around hiding in different areas to evade us as I described. But sometimes it feels that way. Sometimes, you find yourself in a circumstance or situation and you feel like surely this is where God is going to make His presence known. But then He doesn’t.
God has certainly not moved. He is certainly not hiding from you or trying to evade you. It’s simply how we feel. We often find ourselves in situations where we want to ask, “Where are you, God?” David went as far as to accuse God of hiding when he was in times of trouble.
While we may feel that God is hiding, He is listening to our every word and watching our every movement. He knows the troubles we face and has already planned how He is going to move and intervene. So while you may be tempted to think God has left you, don’t worry. He’s still there, still watching, and He will step in and help in your situation at the exact right time.
