Although the fig tree shall not blossom, neither shall fruit be in the vines; the labour of the olive shall fail, and the fields shall yield no meat; the flock shall be cut off from the fold, and there shall be no herd in the stalls: Yet I will rejoice in the LORD, I will joy in the God of my salvation. — Habakkuk 3:17 & 18
It has been many years since my wife and I stood before the preacher and said our wedding vows. I have lived hundreds of days since that day. Many of them I have forgotten. While the years have gone by without stopping, I will never forget that day.
The reason is that I committed my love to my wife on specific terms. While I don’t recall the exact words I said, the words were essentially that I would love her no matter what happens. Whether the times were good or bad. Or whether we were sick or healthy. Even if we had money or no money.
Throughout the years, there have been times when things were good. On many other occasions, things have been bad. But my vow remains, no matter what happens.
In these verses, Habakkuk essentially says those same words, no matter what happens. The trees may not blossom, the fruit may dry up, and other sources of food may pass away. But he says, no matter what happens, he will rejoice and find joy in God. In the next verse, he continues by saying it’s because God is his strength.
Is the love that you have for God like that? Is it a love that is no matter what happens kind of love? There are times that life may be good and times that life may be bad. No matter what happens, our love for God should remain the same.
