Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run, that ye may obtain. — 1 Corinthians 9:24
Recently, I sat down and watched a documentary on the 2013 Boston Marathon. This was the year of the tragic bombing that took place, which we are probably all aware of. Many people around the world had family and friends that were in the race or a close connection in some fashion.
The documentary certainly mentioned the bombing, but it also talked about the actual race in great detail. It described how the runners started miles away from the finish line, and many had trained for months and years just for this one day. While the bombing overshadowed many of the events, the documentary highlighted one fact that is often overlooked. Someone won the race that day.
In fact, a winner in both the men’s and women’s divisions was crowned at the end of the race. They received a specific medal, made only for the winners. Others may have received a medal commemorating the event, but no one else could claim these winners’ medals. They faced their challenges head-on, dedicated themselves fully to the race, laid aside anything that might stand in their way, and kept the finish in view.
There are many challenges we will face along the way in life, but we must remain faithful and true and finish our own race. The best way through is not always the easiest. It involves giving ourselves fully to God and laying aside sin and other things that might stand in our way. It is not about what we want. It’s about what God wants.
But most importantly, we have to keep the finish in view. There’s a prize that lies ahead for those who finish this race with God. Don’t run the race of life trying to obtain the things of this world. Instead, remember the end is not so far away. Keep the finish in view!
