For great is thy mercy toward me: and thou hast delivered my soul from the lowest hell. — Psalm 86:13
Several weeks ago, I sat in a meeting and listened to someone describe the level of work that someone else had finished. It was described that the situation that they inherited was a disaster. They were required to do more work than most people and in the end, turned it into a great circumstance.
As I sat in the meeting, my mind wandered back to the Bible. On so many occasions, the writers describe how God has done something amazing. In various situations and circumstances, they describe how God has intervened and done an amazing, or marvelous, work. Then there is the verse here in Psalm 86.
David’s prayer is recorded here and he talks about the great mercy of God. It was not just that God’s mercy had intervened in the situation, but he described the amazing God we serve. Not only did God have mercy, but God also had mercy towards him specifically. It was an individual experience of God’s mercy. Then he described how God had delivered his soul from the depths of the lowest hell.
In other words, David says that God delivered his soul from the ultimate destruction. The things that threatened to swallow him and destroy him, God delivered him from it all. David was amazed at the amazing work God had done and the mercy God had shown.
Each of us can no doubt reflect on times in our life when God has shown us mercy. There were times when things around us threatened to destroy us, yet God delivered us through His amazing mercy! God has done for us things we could not do for ourselves. What an amazing work God has done in each of our lives. He is worthy of our praise today!
