I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me. — Galatians 2:20
There are quite a few things that we would say we “love” in life. Some people love sports, others love relaxation. Some love eating food while others love cooking food. There are so many statements that we all make in regards to “love” about a variety of things in our lives.
Obviously, all of us would probably say that we love our spouse, children, family, or friends. It is a different kind of love than the things that we love in life. While we may love outdoor activities, I am not quite sure all of us would be willing to sacrifice for it the way we would sacrifice for those special people mentioned before.
It is not to say that we wouldn’t sacrifice something for those things we “love.” When it comes to the special people in our lives, we would go farther for them. We would give more for them. Many times we make sacrifices for those people without expecting anything in return. Unlike the things that we say we “love” in life, where we expect an experience in return for our sacrifice.
The love that we have for those around us is a selfless love, one where we value the person more than what they can give us in return. That is truly the example of Jesus. He is the one Paul said “who loved me.” The love that Jesus had for us goes far beyond the love that we can comprehend. We may say we are willing to sacrifice, even as much as our very life, for our family and friends. But would we do that for everyone?
Jesus loved us so much that He gave His life for us, knowing that we would never be able to repay Him. He knew that even if we did our very best in living our lives for Him, we could never come close to repaying our sin debt. Yet, He still loved us and died for our sins. Thank God for a Savior who despite my inability to repay Him, loved me and gave His life for me.
