Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If any man walk in the day, he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world. But if a man walk in the night, he stumbleth, because there is no light in him. — John 11:9-10
It was a quiet morning around the house. The sun was coming up, but it was still dark as I made my way into the kitchen to look for some caffeine. That’s when it happened. I stepped right onto the toy left in the floor by my son. I couldn’t see it as it was hid perfectly behind the sofa in the darkness.
It can be dangerous to walk around in the dark. You cannot see all the places that you will step or what you may step on or in. Sometimes it is a risk that we take when we walk around in the dark. It’s a risk that we can easily eliminate by just turning on a light.
Jesus shared this same perspective in relating it to our spiritual walks of life. He shared that it’s much easier to walk around during the day because of the light. Now you can still lose your footing in the light, but it’s much more difficult. Why? Because you can see what you are doing.
We often hear the world around us referred to as a world of darkness. It’s a world filled with sin. At nearly every turn, Satan has evil that would love to trip us and cause us to stumble. If we know that’s the goal, why would we walk around in darkness without light?
Far too many Christians are walking around in this world with their lights turned off. They are stumbling through the sin and traps of the world without realizing all they have to do is turn on the light of God that is in their lives. Rather than walking in darkness, we should give everything to God and let Him shine a light on it.
If you find yourself stumbling and falling into the sin and traps of life, ask God to help you shine light on the situation. Spend more time in God’s word, in prayer, and allowing God to lead you. It is the most effective way to make it through this world.
