For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears. And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables. — 2 Timothy 4:3 & 4
We live in a day where we hear a lot of talk about truth. In US politics, we hear talks about truth and lies. We hear a lot of people say “that’s the truth” and then find out later they were sharing lies. It’s challenging to know what is the truth and what is not in our day.
What is really surprising is that many people do not want to hear the truth. They would rather listen to the lies that make them feel better about themselves. They want to hear the lies that will keep them from being convicted of the sin in their life.
Paul writes here in Timothy giving a warning that such a day would come. A day would come where people would rather listen to lies and stories than hear the truth of God. People would rather hear lies and deceit as they chase after their own sin. We are living in a day just as he described. People across the world are choosing to ignore the truth of God, so they can maintain their lives of sin. They want to live any way they want, rather than living their lives dedicated to God. Many continue to search for happiness in the wickedness of the world rather than in the will of God.
Sometimes the truth is hard to hear. Scripture shares that the word of God, the ultimate source of truth, is sharper than a two-edged sword. Sometimes, hearing the truth of God can hurt, but that’s exactly what we need in our day. We need more truth!
Christians across the world need to stand for truth rather than give into the world’s demands for lies. The world around us wants us to compromise our stance for truth. Rather than compromise, we need to dig in deeper. We need stronger relationships with God and to be ready to stand against the sin of the world. No one likes to hear the truth, but our world needs it. Let’s pray today for God’s strength and wisdom to seek and stand for truth.
