Lying lips are abomination to the LORD: but they that deal truly are his delight. — Proverbs 12:22
When we think about lying, we can all immediately go to a particular point in our lives where we were lied to. It may have been a simple lie, or a big lie, but immediately when you think about a lie, you go back to one specific point in time. That’s our nature.
Scripture is very clear that God does not like lies. Verse after verse in Proverbs talks about guarding your lips. The Bible contains warning upon warning about sharing false witness and guarding your heart. All of these emphasize being truthful in the things that you say.
Truth goes one step further than simply being the words that we say. As Christians, we must be mindful that everything we do is being watched by those around us. When you are dishonest in an interaction with someone, it reflects on you but also the God that we serve.
The statement here is that God delights in those who deal truly. He watches the things that we say but also the things that we do. He expects that we will treat everyone the same, no matter their situation or circumstance. It means we take into account others as we put the goal of the gospel ahead of our own desires.
As you go through the day today, remember that God is looking for honesty in everything that we do. He expects that we will interact in a way where people know that we are different. We should not be like everyone else. Instead, we should be fighting for honesty and truth in everything.
