And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD. — Joshua 24:15
Each day we face a choice in life as to who we are going to serve. That choice is a personal one, but it’s also a family one as well. Whether we want to admit it or not, our house is serving something.
That may certainly sound confusing when you first read it, but let me explain. In each of our homes, we make decisions as to what we will focus our time and attention on. It is not that all the things that we may focus on are bad. It may be sporting events, shopping, travel, or many other things.
Each of those things takes a portion of our time and attention, and at times can come between us and our relationship with God. The decisions we make in who we will serve have lasting consequences on not only our own lives, but the lives of those in our home and our family.
Joshua proposed a great question to the people that they should choose who they were going to serve. He told them to weigh it out, putting God on one side and all the other things on the other side. He encouraged them to weigh out the decision and determine who they were going to serve.
As our world attempts to pull us in many different directions, we also need to weigh out the decision of who we are going to serve. We should place all the things that take the time and focus of our family on one side and put God on the other. Are those things bringing you closer to God or taking you away from God? Who is your house serving? Our prayer should be that the things we do and time we spend brings us closer to God and sharing the gospel with the world.
