But his wife looked back from behind him, and she became a pillar of salt. — Genesis 19:26
One of the things I often hear when people talk about living a Christian life is that a Christian will miss out on things. As Christians, we understand that we are representatives of Christ everywhere we go and in everything we do.
Yes, there are things that many people who are not Christians may enjoy, but we stay away from them. But are we really missing out on anything by abstaining from sin?
I’m reminded of the story of Sodom and Gomorrah, a place that was absolutely riddled with sin to the point that it ultimately led to its destruction. Lot and his family were told to flee from the wickedness and to not look back. Unfortunately, Lot’s wife felt like she was missing out on something and we learn she was turned to a pillar of salt.
What was she missing out on? She was missing out on sin. Sin that had she stayed in Sodom and Gomorrah that would have led to her death and destruction. She thought those things were attractive and looked back at them because she felt like she was missing something.
Sin on the surface may look attractive. At times we may feel like we are missing out on something because we are not partaking in the sin of the world. But just as Lot and his family was told to not look back, do not look at sin and think for one second you are missing out on something.
Sin brings about things that make life unenjoyable. With sin, there is no happiness. With sin, there is an emptiness that can never fully satisfy someone. It brings about misery and ultimately can bring about death and destruction. Sin causes us to spend our lives striving for something that only fulfills our worldly desires, not working towards the cause of Christ.
So sure, the world may say that you are missing out on some things. The only thing that you are missing out on are the negatives. True joy, true happiness, and true satisfaction can only be found in Jesus Christ and living a life apart from sin.
