But I have trusted in thy mercy; my heart shall rejoice in thy salvation. — Psalm 13:5
Have you ever found yourself in a difficult situation and it seems that it just keeps getting worse? I certainly have. It seemed that every way I turned, things just got worse. Just when I thought it couldn’t get any worse, something else happened and it was worse.
I think that was somewhat how David felt in verse two of Psalm 13 when he said, “How long shall I take counsel in my soul, having sorrow in my heart daily? how long shall mine enemy be exalted over me?”
David was at the point he was not sure how much longer he could hang on. The situation was so strong and so intense, he was not sure if he could make it through.
It does not matter where you are in life, we can all face these situations. Just like David, we call out and cry out to God for help. We ask God why and we ask God to help us through the situation. While the difficulties are challenging and may take a mental and physical toll on us, we can do what David says in verse 5.
David says that he has trusted in the mercy of God and is rejoicing in His salvation. The concept of mercy has to do with the idea that God may allow us to face the continued trials, but He is there with us. Each time we come through those trials, it is because He provides mercy to us.
Salvation is not salvation from sin in this context, but rather deliverance from the trials of life. When we come through the trials, we can praise God for His actions to deliver us and bring us through them. He has done it in the past and continues to do it each time that we come through the trials of life.
As we face the troubling times, we can think back to the mercy of God we have experienced. While it may be tough to see, He has had mercy for us in the past and has delivered us through the trials. If He has done it before, is He not able to do it again? As the world crashes around you, know that God is still in control.
