The Least Thing

“He that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much: and he that is unjust in the least is unjust also in much.” — Luke 16:10

There are many times in working on our ministry website that I get extremely frustrated. Something breaks, and I have to figure it out. I am far from a computer programmer, but I try my best. Sometimes I have to search line by line in the code. I’ll eventually find it. Somewhere it shouldn’t be, causing problems and breaking things.

It’s usually small. A single character out of place. And that tiny thing is enough to affect everything around it. I’ve come to see that our lives work the same way.

Jesus says that faithfulness is revealed in the least. We tend to think character is built in the big moments: the major decision, the bold stand, the public act of service. But Jesus points us to the small, unseen places.

The quiet prayer no one knows about. The honest hour on a task nobody will check. The promise was kept when it would have been easy to forget. These are not small to God.

Notice that the verse goes both ways. Faithfulness in the little things shows up in the big things. So does unfaithfulness. A compromise we call harmless rarely stays in its own corner. It travels.

This is a word for those of us who are coasting. It’s easy to wait for a big calling while neglecting the small ones in front of us. We say we’ll serve God in great ways, yet we skip the daily obedience He’s already placed in our hands.

Take a quiet inventory today. Is there a small area where you’ve been careless or putting something off? Maybe a word you owe someone, a habit you’ve let slide, or a commitment you’ve let go quiet?

Don’t wait for a bigger test. Be faithful in the least. God sees it, and He is building something with it.
