And the world of the LORD came unto Jonah the second time — Jonah 3:1
It was not long ago that I was working on a project, and I realized that I had messed something up. I had to format the project a specific way. During my work, I became carried away with the work and overlooked the key details of the formatting.
Even though I had spent hours working on this project, I had to go back and start on it a second time. More hours were needed to get this project correct. But in the end, I was thankful that I had the opportunity to work on the project and make the corrections that I needed to make.
Life does not always come with second chances, however. There are many instances in life where we only get one opportunity to do something. A lack of faith or confidence can often stand in our way, especially when it comes to the things of God!
Jonah had a significant opportunity here; he was given a second chance. He realized from his mistake that he needed to make the best of this second opportunity. But I often have wondered what might have happened if Jonah had listened the first time.
I am thankful that God often provides second chances, but our heart’s desire should be that we trust God so deeply that we listen the first time. If we make the best of the first time, it can save us from tremendous heartache and heartbreak. How can you live your life to better listen to God the first time?
Prayer – Thank you for your mercy that never ends, even when I fail. You are a graceful God who gives second chances when I fall short. I may often hesitate or delay when you first speak to me. Forgive me for these moments when fear, doubt, and distraction keep me from trusting you and help create in me a heart that will listen and respond to your call quickly. Amen.
