Your name is on the list

Notwithstanding in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven. — Luke 10:20

Several years ago, I worked for a company that kept very strict records of attendance in meetings. In each meeting, a list was kept of who attended and who didn’t. In fact, when you walked into the meeting, you had to look for who was taking attendance and make sure that your name was on the list.

I remember when I walked into the meeting room, I would always find that person. It was usually the same person each month, and she would always look at me and say, “your name is on the list!” When she said that, I knew that my attendance was recorded.

As I read this verse recently, I couldn’t help but think back to those meetings. It was always important that your name was on the list. But this verse is describing a list that is far more important. This list isn’t just a meeting list, but an eternal list!

Jesus is reminding that while He has placed things subject to us in this life, that isn’t something worth rejoicing over. Instead, it’s more important that our name is recorded in heaven. In fact, it’s the most important thing that can ever happen in life.

If your name is recorded as having accepted Jesus Christ as Savior, rejoice today! But if your name isn’t recorded, if you have never accepted Jesus as Savior, you can give your heart to Him today. It’s the most important decision you will ever make. Knowing your name is there is something worth rejoicing in!
