For our conversation is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ. — Philippians 3:20
Each of us is involved in a lot of conversations every day. We talk to our family, friends, coworkers, and many others. Our conversations consist of a lot of different topics, too! We often talk about the weather, sports, activities, and more.
If we are honest, there have probably been a few times that we can think of conversations that we had with others it was unpleasant. Perhaps they were aggressive, rude, crude, vile, or, as someone I know pretty well says, just plain nasty. The truth is, human nature is far from nice.
Gone are the days when people used to be ashamed of how they spoke. It’s not uncommon to hear any curse word imaginable on television. Our society has become almost desensitized to the idea of having respectable conversations with others.
This verse does not mean that our conversations are happening in heaven. If I could summarize in my own words, it is a reminder that we are citizens of Heaven and that everything we do is a reflection of our Savior. Every word, every deed, everything is a reflection of Him.
If others were to hear you go about your day, what would they say about what they hear? Would there be enough evidence to prove you are a Christian, or do you simply sound like the rest of the world? God calls us to be different, set apart for Him. Everyone who may meet us and talk to us should recognize that there’s something different about us. They should be able to see Jesus through each of us.
