Whom have I in heaven but thee? and there is none upon earth that I desire beside thee. — Psalm 73:25
My son is much like every other child in the world. He often finds things that he wants, thanks to clever advertisements or product placements. If he is told no, he often makes a list or reminds me and my wife that it is something he wants.
As adults, we are not much different. We all face situations where we have things we want. It could be a new car, a new house, a nice meal, or even the latest tech gadget. What we often fail to realize is that this desire, or our wants, are part of human nature.
We were designed by God to have an internal desire. But that desire was designed by God to be for God. Yet, we are often distracted by the things of this world. That doesn’t mean that those things always come in the way of God, but they easily can!
I love this verse of Psalm 73 where the Psalmist says there is none upon earth that I desire beside thee, referring to God. You could almost summarize this verse by saying, “there are a lot of things in this world that I could want, but I only want you.” What an amazing statement and challenge to us all!
As you consider all the things about you in life, where is your desire? Is your desire on God above all else? The world has a lot of distractions that it brings, but none of them compare to Him! He should be our heart’s desire!
