Through it together

Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, answered and said to the king, O Nebuchadnezzar, we are not careful to answer thee in this matter. — Daniel 3:16

Many years ago, I was working with a coworker on a project. We had discussed the project many times and decided on the way we wanted to present our work. As the time for the completion of the project approached, I felt more and more confident in our work. We were functioning as a team, and things were going well.

As we went into the room to present the results of our project, we started to get several questions. As the questions came in, this coworker decided to start going a different direction. No more were we working as a team, he decided to go his own direction as he thought it would help him to leave me behind.

I will never forget as we walked out of that room. I learned a challenging lesson that day. As the situation became more challenging, my teammate abandoned me. We were supposed to be in the situation together. Instead, I walked out alone.

I often wonder what might have gone through the minds of these three men as they faced the king. I wonder if one considered abandoning the group? Instead, we see that as they faced the fire, they remained together. Sometimes, that is exactly what we need in life.

We are all going to face the moments of fire in life. That is guaranteed. But we don’t have to face them alone. We have God on our side and do not have to face the fire without Him. But it certainly makes it easier when we can face it together, with fellow Christians who are willing to stay by our side.
