Wherefore that field was called, The field of blood, unto this day. — Matthew 27:8
I’ve always been fascinated with history. One day, as I read this verse in Matthew 27, I decided that I wanted to start researching the field of blood. If you study the book of Acts, you will find another name mentioned for this field called Aceldama.
The field was known historically as the potter’s field, which we read a few verses prior. Many believe that the history of this field is that it was rich with clay deposits, allowing the potters to retrieve the clay to mold and make vessels. But after Judas’ betrayal of Jesus, it was purchased with the pieces of silver and became a burying place for strangers.
As I reflected on these thoughts, I couldn’t help but recall how many times locations receive names or reputations based on what has happened. Golgotha was known as the place of the skull, well known for the death of Jesus. Even in our day, we can name certain locations and we quickly associate it with events that happened there.
More than just the remembrance of this name, this is a clear reminder of what sin can do in our lives. Consider what happened with the potter’s field. It used to be a field where clay could be retrieved, allowing vessels to be created and benefitting others. Now, it was a burial ground for strangers. It has the connotations of desolation and destruction. That is exactly what sin will do!
As you examine your life, has it gone from a field that benefits God to a field of death and destruction? Sin can certainly have that effect. Just because it is that way now, doesn’t mean it has to stay that way. God is an expert in forgiveness and restoration. If you are still alive, He still has a purpose and plan for you. Instead of living in that place of desolation, run back to Him. Let the Potter take you, mold you, and fill you with purpose once again!
