He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. — Psalm 23:2

As I drove through the countryside recently, I noticed on both sides of the road were rather large farms. These farms all had different purposes. Some advertised that they were cattle farms. Others shared that they had horses. Perhaps they were selling cheese and milk. As I continued down the road, I came upon a herd of cattle that were lying content in a field.

I remember thinking to myself how content they looked. All of them appeared healthy. They were not searching for food or water. It was not the time of day that you would anticipate seeing them looking to sleep. Instead, they were simply content. All their needs were met, and they found the most comfortable area of grass to lie down in and be content.

When I reflect on the first phrase of this verse, this calm contentment is what comes to mind. It isn’t the idea of someone searching for things that they need. Instead, all the needs are met. David shares the image of someone who has all needs fully supplied and who is simply enjoying calm contentment.

This type of contentment can only be found in God. He is the one who supplies our daily needs. He is the one who gives us rest and comfort from the cares of this life. When we are fully relying on Him, we can find a place of calm contentment in Him!

Do you need some of that peace today? Perhaps life has brought about some turmoil and challenges. Remember where your help and strength come from. God has supplied all that you need and cares for you. Trust Him and let Him bring you to a place of calm contentment.
