For the LORD God is a sun and shield: the LORD will give grace and glory: no good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly. — Psalm 84:11
A few days ago, I set out for an early morning drive to a nearby town for work. I started out just before dawn driving toward the east. After some time, the light started to grow around me and I started to see the sun rising on the horizon.
After a few more minutes, the sun was so bright that I was nearly blinded. I immediately started to look for something that could help me see amid the light. I flipped down the visor of my car, but it was not enough to block the sun. After a few moments I realized that the only hope I had was to use my hand to shield myself from the sun.
In that moment, I could have argued to go without the brightness of the sun. But as the day went, I sure was thankful for the sunlight. It made for a beautiful day, giving light for many hours while I went about my day. It provided light, warmth, and a much needed perspective.
I’ve often reflected on this verse in Psalm, but certainly saw it differently after this recent day. God is our sun, shining light on all things about us. He brings light, warmth, and beauty to all that is around us. But sometimes we need a shield! Somteimes, we need something to protect us.
There are many times in life where we need something to shine light on the world around us to see the beauty. At other times, we need a shield to protect us amid the fierce battles. No matter which, God is the one that is capable of meeting your need. He can give you light, protection, grace, and glory. Praise God today for His many blessings!
