Things of the past

That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts. — Ephesians 4:22

Many experiences in life show change through growth. For example, as a child goes through school, they learn the basics. General math, reading, and other basic foundational teachings are given. As the school years progress, new teachings begin to build upon the foundational teachings that were given. Advanced math, science, and other things are added.

The process continues as we become adults. For example, when someone starts a new job, they are learning and will often be slower in their work than someone with more experience. As the learning process continues, they will usually gain efficiency and speed. Perhaps they even grow enough so that they are training others in how to do a specific process or task.

The same is true of our Christian life. After accepting Christ, we start out on a new journey. We are no longer the same person that we were. In the words of this verse, the things that we used to do should be placed aside. They are corrupt, founded in sin. It is part of the old man or who we used to be.

As this verse shares, what we used to be should be put off and set aside. We should no longer engage in those things but rather have our actions and our thoughts consumed by the things of God. But many times, we hold on to those things, never maturing in our relationship with God.

Are you holding on to things of the past? Have you put aside the things that might stand in your way of serving God appropriately? Our desire should be to live a life dedicated to God, where the things of the past do not get in the way.
