Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour. — 1 Peter 5:8
When I began traveling for work many years ago, I was in various airports multiple times per week. For many travelers, the airport is an uncomfortable experience. When you are in the airport as much as I was, you begin to learn the names of workers, and the sights, sounds, and noises become a little more common.
One of those noises that I often overlooked was a routine announcement that played over the airport speakers. It would say something like, “Be on the lookout for things out of the ordinary. If you see something out of the ordinary, let someone know.” It was meant as a reminder to those inside the airport to remain vigilant about the things going on around them.
Just like I became accustomed to the announcement playing over the speaker, we often become accustomed to things going on in life. We often become distracted by the situations and circumstances. Often, it results in us losing our vigilance. We overlook the warning signs and the traps. There are moments when we will find ourselves in the middle of a crisis before we realize it.
In this verse, it is a great reminder to remain vigilant. At every moment and every turn of life, the devil is looking for an opportunity. He wants to see you sin. He wants you to mess up. Nothing brings him more joy than when you fall into his trap.
As we continue through life, one of the most important things we can do is to remain vigilant. We must keep our eyes open, watching for the traps of the devil. If we see something, we should let God know. He is more than willing to help us navigate the snares of the devil, if we ask Him!
