There be many that say, Who will shew us any good? LORD, lift thou up the light of thy countenance upon us. — Psalm 4:6
Not long ago, I was reading a new article that was talking about people who had previously won a lottery. These were people who had won what many considered major jackpots, winning millions of dollars. It was the type of money that most would consider would change someone’s life forever.
After reading the article, that seemed to be true. Many of these people went on extravagant spending sprees. They spent millions on all the things that money could buy. They bought houses, cars, and things. But the article said that most of them, in the end, were left without much of anything. While they had all these “things,” they were left without something very important in the end.
For all the things that they could buy, they weren’t able to buy happiness. Many of them were left without any money to their name in the search for happiness. The world showed them all sorts of things that should make someone happy, but in the end, they couldn’t find it.
In this verse of Psalm 4, David writes, “who will shew us any good?” In other words, who can make us happy? It was a search for happiness, but David already knew the answer. Happiness couldn’t be found in the things of this world. No matter where he would look, happiness didn’t exist. It could only be found in God.
Are you searching for happiness? Are you looking everywhere in this world for it, but can’t seem to be happy? If so, you will never find it there. Instead, look for it in the presence of God. Spend time in His word, in prayer, and in living for Him. That’s where you can find happiness.
