There is that maketh himself rich, yet hath nothing: there is that maketh himself poor, yet hath great riches. — Proverbs 13:7
Years ago, I was working on the ambulance when we were called to respond to a medical emergency. We arrived and took care of the patient, leaving them in the capable hands of the hospital in the local area. Once the call was finished, my partner and I got back into the ambulance and began our drive back to the base when he started asking me questions.
He said, “Do you know who that patient was?” Honestly, I had never seen the person before. I responded that I didn’t know them. He proceeded to tell me that this person was perhaps one of the richest people in the area. You would have never known it by looking at them, however. The appearance on the outside told a different story.
This person wore old clothes, which were dirty beyond measure. They lived in a rather small house that was far from a mansion or some of the nice houses that others lived in. Yet, this person was one of the most pleasant and appreciative patients that I have ever interacted with.
There are many in this life who chase the riches of this world so they can show it. They want the nicest cars and homes. They will do whatever it takes to prove to others their wealth and worth. But in the end, do they really have anything without Jesus Christ?
For Christians, it is not what you see that makes them rich beyond measure. It’s the treasure that lives inside them. It’s our Savior, our Lord, and our King! You can have all the wealth of this world, but without Jesus, do you really have anything at all?
