Wandering eyes and distraction

Let thine eyes look right on, and let thine eyelids look straight before thee. Ponder the path of thy feet, and let all thy ways be established. — Proverbs 4:25-26

Just recently, my family was in a store, and we went in different directions. My son was with me, and he was looking at all the interesting things that the store had on the shelves to distract him. As we continued to walk, he lingered behind as I rounded a corner.

As I turned the corner, I realized that he wasn’t with me. I turned around and went back to where we were. That’s where I found him. Completely distracted by something that made noise on the shelf. He never realized that I had continued to walk away. As I approached, he saw me out of the corner of his eye and realized he was almost left behind.

There are moments in life when we all become distracted. The world has a way of putting shiny things in front of us. Things that cause us to lose focus and perhaps lose sight of our walk with God. These verses in Proverbs are a reminder about our eyes wandering and being distracted by the world.

While we can be distracted, it becomes much more difficult when our eyes are fixed on God. When our focus is on Him, and we are committed to walking with Him, we can ignore the things the world puts in front of us.

What has your eyes wandering today, causing you distraction? Are the noisy distractions of the world catching your attention and causing you to lose your closeness to God? Today is a great day to regain your focus, reaffirm your path, and ask God to help you manage the distractions.
