O LORD, thou hast searched me, and known me. — Psalm 139:1

Having worked in a variety of jobs over the years, there are a lot of people who know me. Many know me as their former leader, a former coworker, or even a work friend. If you were to mention my name, they would recall memories and things about me and our time of working together. While they may know me, they do not necessarily know me.

Then, there are my friends and family. My wife knows me pretty well. If you were to ask my son if he knows me, he would tell you my name and that I’m his dad. If you were to call my parents, brother, or sister and ask if they know me, they would most definitely say they do. Call my closest friends, and they will tell you they know me. They all know me better than anyone else.

Even though they know me well, they do not necessarily know me to the level David describes in this verse. The word searched means to examine thoroughly or deeply. It means that God knows you to the very depths of who you are. He really knows you!

Today, take a moment to reflect on what God knows about you. He knows your thoughts and actions. He knows the things you keep in your heart. When you consider that God knows all those things, how do you feel? Most of us are probably not proud of all that God knows about us.

That is why David ended this Psalm by asking God to see if there is any wicked way in him and help lead him to remove it. That should be our prayer today. God knows us better than anyone else. If we want to remove the distractions that get in the way of being close to God, we should ask Him to help us remove them.
