If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. — 1 John 1:9

As I sat and watched the scene play out, I could tell this was not going to end well. Two people were in a disagreement, and they were yelling loudly. As they continued, you could sense the tension that was building up. Finally, the disagreement broke, and an apology was made. It would be such a great story if it ended there. Two people solving a conflict.

Instead, the second person responded by saying, “I accept your apology and apologize that I was heated. But I will never forgive you for what you did.” Thankfully, this was a scene on a television show that I was watching, but the same scenario plays out in life nearly every day. The truth is we struggle to forgive and forget.

It is not only present in our relationship with others but also in our spiritual relationship with God. We often hold our own sins over our heads, never forgetting that our sins are forgiven and forgotten by God. It’s not a license to live as we wish but rather a reminder that we do not have to live defeated.

So many Christians are defeated by their past. They remember their faults, failures, and sins that could have been prevented. But instead of living a defeated life, we should be living a confessed life. Confess your sins to God, knowing that He will forgive and forget!

What is in your past that continues to weigh you down? No matter what it is, God will forgive you and will forget it forever! He has promised that once our sin is forgiven, it is removed as far as the East is from the West. You don’t have to live defeated by your past if you are living forgiven by the grace of God!
