In spite of it all

To the Lord our God belong mercies and forgivenesses, though we have rebelled against him. — Daniel 9:9

If you ask people around you about the worst person they know, you will hear a lot of different answers. Some will answer with the name of someone that they do not agree with. It is perhaps a past disagreement, a personality conflict, or something similar. They will tell you that person gets under their skin and is perhaps the worst person of all.

Others may talk about someone they read about in the news. It could be someone who committed a violent crime. Others may say that it is someone who was driving impaired, had an accident, and took the life of someone else. The answer could even be someone who has physically or emotionally abused friends or family members, causing great distress in life.

In his prayer, Daniel admits to God all the failures of the people from his day. They didn’t listen to God, and they were rebellious. Some might say they weren’t great people for the things they had done. The truth of the matter is that the sin was the problem. They struggled to deal with their sin.

In 1 Timothy 1:15, Paul says he was the chief of sinners. In other words, he claimed he was the worst of the worst by all he had done. If we are all honest, we can all say how horrible we were. We have all rebelled. We have all sinned. And in the end, we all needed a Savior.

In spite of all that we have done, God loved us. He gave us mercy and forgiveness. Just as Daniel said, though we have sinned, God still gave us mercy and forgiveness. God’s mercy is not what we deserved. In spite of it all, God loved us, giving us mercy, forgiveness, and grace!
