For we have no might against this great company that cometh against us; neither know we what to do: but our eyes are upon thee. — 2 Chronicles 20:12

There are many moments in life when we experience chaos. Those moments when things happen in life that disrupt what we consider normal. It can happen on a variety of levels. I think about the chaos that came into our world because of World Wars, the attacks of September 11th, and many more.

For us personally, chaos can come into our lives on a personal level without an event of this significance. For some, losing their job, losing a family member, or something as simple as not being able to pay the bills can plunge their life into chaos. Let a child be injured on the playground and life can become chaotic. Or someone who usually gets around so well falls and needs surgery to repair a broken hip; this can create chaos.

Chaos is typically temporary, but the results of that chaos can be long lasting. It often leaves us in situations where we are facing things that we don’t have the answers to. That was the situation in this verse. A great enemy come against the people, and they didn’t now what to do.

Rather than losing hope, they focused their eyes on God! It didn’t take away the enemy. It didn’t take away the chaos that was in their lives. But they realized where to focus in the chaos. Looking to God put the attention on the one who can help navigate chaos for good.

Don’t lose hope because your life is in chaos. Instead, remember where to focus in the chaos. If you look at yourself, you will quickly see you are overwhelmed. If you focus on God, you will see the endless supply of mercy and grace needed to make it through.
