We will rejoice in thy salvation, and in the name of our God we will set up our banners: the LORD fulfil all thy petitions. — Psalm 20:5
There are several images that come to my mind when I think of a flag. I always think of the popular photo of the raising of the flag on Iwo Jima. Joe Rosenthal took the photo while working for the Associated Press. The photo showed Marines raising a flag on one of the highest peaks on Iwo Jima and inspired the monument that was dedicated some time later.
Another image that comes to mind is of the firefighters raising a flag after September 11. In the aftermath of the terrorist attacks, I’ll never forget watching the video and seeing the images of those firefighters raising their flag over New York City. In both situations, it was clear that these people were identifying as Americans and with America.
In this verse, David writes that in the name of God, they would set up banners. To make it a little easier to understand, David is essentially saying, in the name of God we will fly our flags. David had no shame in identifying with God. He wanted those around Him to see who he identified with.
Every Christian should want to fly their flag for God any chance they get. We should want those around us to know who we identify with. They should see it in everything about us. Whether watching our lives or hearing our words, those around us should know who we identify with.
Are you flying your flag for God? We are in the middle of a world of sin. It’s a hostile environment. Even so, we should not be ashamed to let others know we stand with God. Fly your flag!
