And they were not able to resist the wisdom and the spirit by which he spake. — Acts 6:10
There are some people who know how to deliver a great speech. I can think of many examples of those who have, for lack of better words, owned the room. They captured the attention of the audience almost immediately. They held their attention, shared their message, and left a lasting impression on everyone who listened to their words.
There are many times I have heard others who seem to struggle to speak. There were those who seemed unprepared for what they were saying. Perhaps they seemed fake. Other times, I just struggled to follow where the message they shared was going. We can all think of those who we have heard speak that relate to these scenarios.
In this verse, Stephen didn’t struggle with that. In fact, Stephen got the attention of the people, making them feel uncomfortable. The wisdom that he had regarding the scripture and how he spoke to them in spirit bothered them. So much so that they went against Stephen, catching him, and brought him before the council.
This wasn’t because Stephen did anything wrong. Stephen was living right. He was doing what God wanted Him to do. But Stephen was living his life so filled with the Holy Spirit and so close to God that it made those who weren’t uncomfortable. Talk about leaving an impact!
As we reflect on this verse today, our desire should be that we are filled with the Holy Spirit and so close to God as Stephen was. It may make others around us uncomfortable, and that’s okay. There are moments in life that are uncomfortable. We should desire to live life with impact for God, rather than living life with regret.
