Showing proof

By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another. — John 13:35

Not long ago, I sat down to watch a TV show where people would bring in items to see how much they were worth. On the show, people brought in various antiques and collectibles, and many of them had a story that was associated with the item. Some shared how it was passed down by family. Others shared how they acquired the item.

One item that was on the show was an item that was claimed to be owned by a former president and signed by that president. The item was over 100 years old and was found by the person who owned it. The person had done their research, but all they had were stories and claims. The person who was valuing the item for them told them they needed proof.

An expert who also knew about this item was consulted. Soon, they were willing to sign, stating it was an authentically signed item, giving the owner proof that their claim was valid. The item went from just a small relic to a truly collectible item from history.

There are many times in life when proof is needed to validate things. In this verse, we read the words “by this.” Jesus is saying that in how we love each other, we prove to those around us that we are Christian. Our love for others is showing proof of Christ living within.

As others look at our lives, do they see Christ through the love we show others? That isn’t just our spouse, family, and friends. Jesus said that we are to love everyone, just as He did. He didn’t love their sin, and we shouldn’t either. But He did love everyone, regardless of whether they accept or reject Him. It may not always be easy, but we should love in the example of Jesus, and in turn, that allows others to see Christ in us.
