And again another scripture saith, They shall look on him whom they pierced. — John 19:37

I remember many years ago when video conferencing started to become popular. I had recently moved into managing medical practices and was traveling the country. The use of video conferencing helped me as I needed to meet with people across the country and instead of just being able to call them, I could actually see them as we spoke.

There were times I met people for the first time on a video conference. Perhaps we spoke several times before I made a visit and met them in person. It was much different when I met them face to face. Their facial features were different. You can see other details about someone, such as their eyes, how they express themselves, and so much more. In other words, it is a unique experience when you genuinely see someone for the first time.

This verse has always stood out because it says they shall look on him whom they pierced. While the verse is talking about those who were physically there, it was so much more. They saw Jesus not as the son of a carpenter from Galilee, but instead as the sacrifice given so they might be forgiven of their sin. They saw Him for who He truly was.

For many people, they only see Jesus as one who was born in a manger. Others see Him as the one who performed miracles. Many want to say Jesus is a man of love for all, without judgment, and full of peace. But they never see Him as their Savior.

When we look at Jesus, what do we see? While I wasn’t physically there piercing Him, I am responsible as I am a sinner. When we see Jesus, we should see the one who gave His life for us. Jesus didn’t go to the cross so we would have another story to tell. He went so that we might find forgiveness from sin.
