Thou hast put gladness in my heart, more than in the time that their corn and their wine increased. — Psalm 4:7
Everyone wants to be happy. It is a natural desire of anyone that we want to be filled with joy in life. That is why people all across the world spend millions of dollars each year on things that they believe will make them happy. They buy new houses, new cars, and new things in an attempt to find joy.
Sometimes, it even goes beyond things. Many people look to experiences in life to bring them joy. They expect to find joy at a ball game, a comedy show, a concert, or numerous other events. Millions of dollars are spent on attempts to find joy in this life each year. A joy that lasts for just a few hours at most.
David was no different than we were. He wanted joy in his life as well. Throughout the Psalms, he wrote about his attempts to find joy. He chased joy among the pleasures of this life. Amid his search, David identified the source of true joy: God!
In this verse, David said that he has had more joy in his heart than he deserved. More than all those who were chasing joy in the things of this world. If I were to summarize his words, it would be, “They may have joy for a short time, but God, you’ve given me joy beyond measure!”
Are you looking for joy? If so, where are you looking? You might find it for a short time in this world, but real, lasting joy comes from God. Once you experience the joy of God, you will quickly realize that the joy of this world doesn’t compare. Stop chasing joy in the world and go to the source: God!
