But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen. — 2 Peter 3:18
It was always fun when I was younger to have my parents measure how tall I was becoming. We would often stand in a door frame as my dad marked our height with a pencil and would then use a tape measure to say how tall we had become. We might even still have the mark from last time to show how much we had grown from the last measurement.
Then, I would often get around people who I haven’t seen in quite some time and they would share with me how much I had grown. Grandparents would comment that I had grown a lot since they last saw me. Others would say how much I was growing up and looking just like my dad.
While we often look at these things in the natural sense, there is a time when we need to see how much we have grown in the spiritual sense. From the time we accept Christ, we set out on a new path, learning and growing in God. But many Christians never seem to grow to their full potential!
If you examined your life today, how much have you grown spiritually? Would anyone who knew you when you accepted Christ be amazed by how you have grown in the knowledge and grace of Jesus? Or can we see any growth at all?
God did not design our lives to be stagnant. He designed our lives so that we might continue to learn and grow in Him. That takes effort on our part. Instead of eating vegetables to grow strong and tall, we must spend time in God’s word and spend time in prayer. It is the only way we can grow spiritually as God wants us to.
