And Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of the LORD, died, being an hundred and ten years old. — Judges 2:8

Some time ago, I came across someone who had shared an obituary on their social media page. In the text, it spoke about how the person was an avid fan of their favorite sports team. They shared their lifelong commitment to their spouse for many years and many other details about their life and family.

It wasn’t too long after that when I came across this verse in Judges 2:8. If we all reflect on the life of Joshua, we can probably think of the many things he is known for in the Bible. I think about the story of Rahab and the spies under Joshua’s leadership. The story of Jericho and the walls that came tumbling down. There are many other things that I think about when I consider Joshua.

If this were in our day today, I imagine that the obituary article would have said all of those things. It would have outlined his military leadership and his work with Moses. While his life story included all those things, we find here his “obituary” where it says he was a servant of the Lord.

This is the most important thing that could be said about anyone. It doesn’t matter all the accomplishments that you have in this world. What matters is that we are a servant of the Lord. That is how we should want everyone to remember us!

If your life were to end today, what would others say about you? Would they remember you for your business skills, contributions to society, or many other things that we could be remembered for in this world. Or will they say we were truly a servant of the Lord? That should be our desire, that everyone remembers us as a servant of the Lord.
